Blame
I cast no blame toward you – or me –
We schooled each other quietly -
To value prizes, or acclaim–
Likewise, emphasizing tasks
and chores as if their sure defeat
to our most muscular advance
were more the metric of a challenge met
than were the hugs and kisses we’d avoid
overtly, always looking past the present
right before our very eyes. We acclimated distance
Even when our fingertips could touch
By one swift snap.
We cannot measure touch that wasn’t felt,
Or put a price on forfeit of a pleasure.
No, I cast no blame for what we taught
Each other.
Instead, I am distraught that we have learned
